Our Vision at BD Support and Advocacy is to empower individuals by ensuring they have access to the right support, information, and services. We strive for a community where everyone’s voice is heard, rights are respected, and needs are met with compassion and dignity.
Our team is made up of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about our mission. We come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of skills and expertise to our work. Together, we are committed to making a difference in our community.
Since our founding in 2024, BD Support & Advocacy has helped individuals and families in our community. From providing emergency assistance to helping people find stable housing, we are proud of the impact we have made. But there is still much work to be done, and we are committed to continuing our efforts.
Becky brings over 20 years of experience in the care sector and 3 years in support services. As a mother of three older children, two with SEND needs, she has both professional and personal insight into the challenges families face. Her lived experience drives her passion for providing compassionate, effective support to those in need.
Attendance Allowance is a UK benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care due to a physical or mental disability. It is not means-tested and is paid at two rates, depending on the level of care needed. It helps cover the extra costs of long-term illness or disability.
Carer’s Allowance is a benefit in the UK for people who care for someone with substantial disabilities or health needs. To qualify, you must care for someone for at least 35 hours a week, and the person you care for must receive a qualifying disability benefit. Carer’s Allowance is currently £81.90 per week (as of 2025), but claiming it may affect other benefits you or the person you care for receive.
Pension Credit is a UK benefit that tops up the income of people over State Pension age who have a low income. It comes in two parts: Guarantee Credit, which ensures a minimum weekly income, and Savings Credit, which gives extra money to those who’ve saved towards their retirement. It can also unlock other benefits like help with housing costs and free TV licences.
If you’re responsible for a child under 16 (or under 20 in approved education or training), you may be eligible for Child Benefit and help with childcare costs. You don’t need to be working to claim these, but income limits apply. Only one person can claim Child Benefit per child, and childcare support must be for approved providers.
Universal Credit is a UK benefit that supports people on a low income or out of work. It combines several benefits into one monthly payment and helps with living costs, housing, and childcare. Eligibility depends on your income, savings, and personal circumstances.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a UK benefit for people aged 16 to State Pension age who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability. It helps with extra costs related to daily living or mobility needs, regardless of income or work status.
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a UK benefit for children under 16 who have care or mobility needs due to a disability or health condition. It helps with extra costs and is not affected by income or whether the parent works.
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is a UK benefit for people who have a health condition or disability that affects their ability to work. It provides financial support and access to work-related advice if you’re able to return to work in the future.
Housing advice, applications, tenancy sustainment
Housing applications are the process of applying for council or social housing through your local authority. Priority is usually based on need, such as homelessness, overcrowding, or medical issues. Eligibility and waiting times vary by area.
Tenancy sustainment refers to support services that help individuals maintain their housing and avoid eviction. This can include help with budgeting, managing rent arrears, accessing benefits, and resolving landlord or neighbour issues.
Advice and signposting involves providing guidance and directing people to the right services or resources to help with their issues, such as benefits, housing, or healthcare. It helps individuals find the support they need quickly and effectively.
Debt management is the process of organizing and planning how to repay debts. It often involves budgeting, negotiating with creditors, and setting up payment plans to help people manage and reduce their debt safely.
Domestic violence and abuse signposting provides guidance and directs individuals experiencing abuse to appropriate support services, such as shelters, helplines, counseling, and legal advice, to ensure their safety and well-being.
SEND advice offers guidance and support to families of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), helping them understand their rights, access services, and navigate education and care options.
Food bank referrals provide individuals and families in crisis with access to emergency food supplies. Referrals are usually made by professionals or support services based on need.
Blue Badge is a parking permit for people with disabilities or health conditions that affect their mobility. It allows easier access to parking, including in disabled bays and some restricted areas. Eligibility is based on specific medical or mobility criteria.
Advice for Adult and Child Social Care provides guidance on accessing support services for vulnerable adults and children, including care assessments, safeguarding, and help at home. It ensures individuals and families get the right care tailored to their needs.

Yes, all the support and advice provided by BD Support and Advocacy is completely free of charge. We are a volunteer-run service dedicated to helping people access the support they need without any fees.
No, we do not charge for referrals or any support we offer. However, some external services or agencies we refer you to may have their own fees or charges, which we will make you aware of in advance whenever possible.
